How to Create a Rhyming Engine [on hold]

I want to make a java project that takes user input which is going to be a rhyme, for example "the cat in the hat, has a bat, it is fat." And the project should be able to sort through the entire rhyme, and be able to verify if the rhyme is valid or not. A valid rhyme is something that rhymes exactly or sounds similar such as "valid" and "rabbit" they sound similar. I need guidance as to how I can create an algorithim that can sort through and verify rhymes from the user input. I am not expecting this to be done for me but any advice would be appreciated.
